The Knight moves in a direction described as an “L”. The Knight, from a starting square, moves 2 squares, up, down, left, or right, and then one square at a right angle, forming an “L” [Ref: Figure 8.1 & 8.2]. The Knight is the only piece that may jump over other pieces but only captures the piece of the square that he lands on (not the pieces he jumps over). The white Knights begin the game on b1 and g1. The black Knights begin on b8 and g8. The Knight has a piece value of 3 points (equal to the Bishop). NOTE: EVERY move the Knight makes ALWAYS changes the color of the square that it stands on.

Fun Activity:

Capture the Pawns – Knight: Set up your chess board as shown to the right and see if you can use the Knight to capture all of the pawns in the least number of moves possible.

BONUS: Wonderful! For an extra challenge, repeat the previous exercise, but this time make sure that your Knight never steps into danger. Can you find a way to accomplish this in just 18 moves? Note: This requires an understanding of topic 9.

Alan Turing, often referred to as the “father of digital computer”, was a renowned British mathematician, logician, and computer scientist who made groundbreaking contributions to the fields of mathematics and computing. He was born on June 23, 1912, in London, England. Turing’s exceptional intelligence and logical thinking abilities were evident from a young age.
During World War II, Turing played a vital role in breaking the German Enigma code, a highly sophisticated encryption system used by the Nazis. His work significantly impacted the outcome of the war. Turing’s contributions in designing machines to decrypt Enigma messages not only saved countless lives but also paved the way for the development of electronic computers.
After the war, Turing focused on the emerging field of computer science. He proposed the idea of artificial intelligence and developed the concept of the Turing test, a method to assess a machine’s ability to exhibit human-like intelligence. His work in this area opened up new possibilities and inspired generations of researchers in the field of AI.

Tragically, this great scientist passed away on June 7, 1954, at the age of 41.

Today, Mind Rocket dedicates it’s newly created Chatbot (in house development) in the memory of this great scientiest. Please have a look and do chat with our chatbot.

Mind Rocket সশ্রদ্ধ প্রনাম জানায় এই জাদু সম্রাটকে।

The chess board is a checkered board made up of eight vertical columns, called files, and eight horizontal rows, called ranks. This creates 64 squares, both light and dark. Every rank and file has a name. The a – file, b – file, c – file, etc. The
1st rank, 2nd rank, etc. This gives every square a name listed by letter and number (eg. b3, d7, g5, h1) Ref: [Figure 2.1]. The chessboard must be set up so that both players have a white square on their right hand corner.

Chess is a game for two players. One player controls the white pieces and the other player controls the black pieces.
Traditionally, players start the game by shaking hands with their opponent. White always moves first and then players take turns (white then black then white, etc). Turns consist of moving a piece from one square to another square (as described in topics 4 – 9).
A player may capture an opponent’s piece by moving their piece to the square the opponent’s piece occupies, in doing so, removing thenopponent’s piece and setting it on the side of the board. A player may never capture their own piece. The goal of the game is to checkmate an opponent’s King (as explained in Topic 11).

India’s Contribution

Historical records show that the 8×8 chessboard dates from the days of Mahabharata and Ramayana. Board games are also described in early Buddhist literature as well as Chinese works.  Considering the rich Indian chess history and the timeline of chess, it helps to know the immense contributions made by Indians.

The rules of chaturanga were a lot different from modern chess. The word “chaturanga” means “four-limbed,” referring to ancient army divisions of infantry, cavalry, elephantry, and chariotry. In Shiva Purana as well, there is a mention of Lord Shiva playing a game of dice on an 8×8 board. There are stories and it is hard to test the veracity of them, but they are nevertheless legendary.

Lord Ravana creates the game of chess to amuse his wife Mandodari. She learns the game and then beats Ravana at it. In contrast, other articles state that it was Mandodari who came up with the game. This was to stop Ravana from fighting wars.

Mandodari found it hard to see the state of Ravana in anger. She prayed to Lord Ganesha for a solution. Ganesha accedes to teach the game to Ravana. Ravana was asked to treat it as a virtual mode of battle rather than fighting real wars.
